Tomah Health, Versiti seek blood donations heading into summer

Tomah Health and Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin are counting on area residents to donate blood heading into a busy time of year.

The organizations have teamed up for a two-day blood drive on May 14 & 15 from noon to 5 p.m. at Recreation Park, 1625 Butts Ave., Tomah.
“While our thoughts turn to enjoying the outdoors, it’s crucial to remember that hospital patients rely on the generosity of volunteer donors year-round,” said Versiti account representative Lauren Sanders Fleming. “Donating blood in May ensures that local blood banks are well-stocked to meet the anticipated increase in demand during the warmer months.”

She said warmer weather can lead to an increase in trauma-related incidents, such as car accidents and outdoor injuries, requiring blood transfusions for victims.

To donate blood, a person must be in good health, at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and have photo identification. Sixteen-year-olds may also donate with parental consent. While the process for whole blood donation usually takes about one hour, the blood collection itself is usually about 10 minutes.
Versiti Blood Center is the sole blood supplier to over 60 hospital systems in Wisconsin including Tomah Health.
