Aging is a natural part of life, but staying healthy while a person gets older is an important ingredient for leading a long life. It will also be the theme of the Tomah Health Community Outreach sponsored Healthy Aging Expo scheduled Sept. 16 from 9 a.m. – noon at the Cranberry Country Lodge, 319 Wittig Road, Tomah.
“Every age group has different health issues in it. We talk about things like osteoporosis as you age, especially in women, and I think that events like this that focus on age-specifics can really help target those important health areas and risks that can occur as we age,” said Tomah Health Community Outreach community educator Whitney Sanjari.
The free event will offer health screenings, like blood pressure and balance and various booths highlighting senior health. “A lot of times you cannot realize you have some of these issues going on or you may not realize the extent of them, especially when it comes to things like blood pressure or even depression. So, I think it’s important to understand and look at patterns in our lives and screenings help kind of bring attention,” Sanjari added.
A presentation on “Everyday Cooking for One or Two” will be held from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. followed by a cooking demonstration from 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. “We really wanted to focus on meeting that need to help people learn instead of cooking for eight or more, how do you cook for one or two,” Sanjari explained. “The lecture is really going to kind of dive into that and give some suggestions and ideas of how you can make cooking more enjoyable and how can you make cooking more affordable and how can you scale back recipes, especially if you’re used to cooking for a large family.” She said various recipes will be featured during the cooking demo.
Complimentary food and refreshments plus door prizes will also be part of the event.
Tomah Health has coordinated the expo for more than 20 years.
